Some of you may have read my musings on facebook about my diet and how great it's made me feel. I think diet more than anything is key to your health, after all, the saying 'you are what you eat' isn't a cliche for nothing.
Last year I was feeling sluggish and, well, crap. It was hard for me to go through the motions of day-to-day life in terms of motivation because I felt so fatigued and well, 'low' in terms of my mood. I get depression anyway and my eating habits were not conducive to a good mood to say the least. My diet was definitely to blame; it consisted of toast, tea, biscuits, potatoes, cake, nutella and next to no fruit or veg - no wonder I felt like I did!
After suffering from numerous ear infections and colds I contracted scarlet fever back in March which really knocked me for six. It took me a while to recover from this, and it made me think and worry about my health a lot. I wondered about my diet and whether my immune system was not optimised because of a lack of nutrients. Perhaps if I ate better I may have had it in a milder form or not at all...
Me at the start of my fitness journey weighing around 10st 4lbs
Anyway, once I recovered I decided to get fit! I overhauled my diet, replaced stodge with veg and fruit, cut out MOST of the rubbish (well, you can't cut everything out - that's a fast-track to misery!) and focused on eating clean. I'd followed some instagram fitness people and noticed they kept using the tag #eatclean so figured I'd give it a try. Eating 'clean' means cutting out all the additives and extra things food manufacturers add to their products as well as 'bad' fats and sugar.
Since mid April I've been eating clean in the form of a vegan diet (for compassionate reasons as well as health) and going to the gym every other day and I must say I feel great! I have so much energy - it's quite remarkable! My body's toning up, my fitness level has rocketed and I am much more productive in terms of business because I feel so good!
I joined the gym/spa at a hotel that's just up the road from me close to the city centre of Cardiff called Holland House Hotel. It has large gym, a jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, lovely pool and spa facilities upstairs too (with a cafe where you can help yourself to free fruit, tea and water - bliss!). It sounds expensive but it's really surprisingly cheap. I previously used the local council-run gym which cost me around £7 for the gym & a swim per visit. This gym costs £38.99 a month peak which roughly works out at £2.40 a visit, with all the added facilities it's a no-brainer.
Anyway, I intend to keep this up and become super-fit as I really can't see me going back to my old bad eating habits. I used to get excited by cake and chocolate, now I get really happy when I'm eating a lovely nutritious meal as I know it will do me good!

My skin and hair already look a million times better thanks to my diet!
